End of 6-Week Grading Period
Can you believe that we've been in school for a month already? Time has been flying FAST! Most of my classes have two big projects under their belts for this grading period. The grading period ends on Wednesday, September 18th and progress reports are passed out to students on Wednesday, September 25th. I have done grade checks with all of my classes so they are aware of their grade and know what they need to do to improve their grade if that's a concern. Progress reports are just that- a way for students and guardians to see the students progress in school and make positive changes for the semester.
In Foundations of Design, the students have been focusing on different types of balance, contrast, and emphasis. They've been paying attention to detail and craftsmanship so that their work presents well during critiques- another thing that they've been introduced to over the past six weeks. I've been VERY pleased with the amounts of successful and detailed work coming out of both of my sections. Color is our next unit.
In Foundations of Drawing, the students have been focusing on value, one of the most important elements of art. They are learning how to turn a shape into a form through the use of value, how to observe, and how to shade using flat & graded values in addition to cross-hatching. Drawing and shading can be a very difficult skill to master, but all students are trying their best and seem to be impressed with their work after they've added value. I know I'm impressed! Our next unit will be perspective, which will also include value.
In Visual Arts, students have also been studying value. They've done numerous sketch book assignments involving the element and they just completed their first project (expression portrait drawings) in color. Can I just say that they are AMAZING? I have a great group of artists this year and they are very eager to learn new things and try new mediums, which is what I will continue to push with them.
Everyone's off to a great start! If you have any concerns, please feel free to contact me any time!

Welcome to the new school year! I hope everyone had a fulfilling and exciting summer vacation- I did! It might take a little bit to get back into the groove of things, but we will be jumping right into our art supplies with ice-breaker projects and classroom building activities.
On this site, parents and students can keep track of what is happening in the classroom and use the above pages to learn more about the course. Each class page has a glassroom "gallery" and includes a class calendar with a short description of the day's assignments. If a student is missing from class one day, it is highly suggested that they visit this website to see what they missed and check with me to see how and when they can make up that work if it is an excused absence.
It's going to be a great year!
